The toga party kicks off in just over a month! Directed by Rebecca Northan, The Comedy of Errors will transport you to the bustling ancient Greek port of Ephesus, where mishaps and misunderstandings abound. In today’s Bard Blog post, meet the talented performers who will be bringing you into the world of this fantastical farce!
Bard veteran Scott Bellis will play Egeon, a merchant of Syracuse who has been sentenced to death by the Duke of Ephesus (Tess Degenstein) for violating the travel ban between the rival cities of Ephesus and Syracuse. Egeon tells the Duke that he has come to Ephesus in search of his twin sons, who were separated as infants in a shipwreck. Moved by the story, the Duke tells Egeon that he will spare his life: but only if Egeon can raise a ransom of 1000 marks by sundown.
Jeremy Lewis and Tal Shulman will make their Bard debuts this Season as the play’s two sets of twins, whose presence wreaks some hilarious havoc on the city. Jeremy will play Egeon’s twin sons, Antipholus of Ephesus and Antipholus of Syracuse, while Tal will take the stage as the Antipholuses’ twin servants, Dromio of Ephesus and Dromio of Syracuse.
When Antipholus and Dromio of Syracuse arrive in Ephesus in search of their lost brothers, what they don’t realize is that their missing twins are in the city—and that Antipholus of Ephesus is a prominent citizen in Ephesus. Meaghan Chenosky will play Adriana, Antipholus of Ephesus’ wife, who runs into Antipholus of Syracuse and mistakes him for her husband. She drags him home for dinner and charges Dromio of Syracuse with guarding the door. As a result, not only do Antipholus and Dromio of Ephesus return to find themselves locked out of their own home, but Antipholus of Syracuse finds himself falling in love not with his “wife,” but with her sister, Luciana (Synthia Yusuf)!
Playing some of the other colourful characters in this world are Emma Houghton (Ensemble and Understudy for Dromio of Ephesus/Dromio of Syracuse/Courtesan/2nd Merchant/Citizen/Nun), Karthik Kadam (Courtesan/2nd Merchant/Citizen/Nun), Jacob Woike (Ensemble and Understudy for Antipholus of Ephesus/Antipholus of Syracuse), and Raugi Yu (Abbess/Jailer/Balthazar/Officer/Nun), with Leslie Dos Remedios and Craig Erickson as our incredible understudies.
Will the brothers be able to overcome this case of mistaken identity to find their happy ending—and save Egeon’s life? Join us on the Howard Family Stage this Season to find out!
