OVERVIEW

Bard on the Beach is Western Canada’s largest professional Shakespeare festival, with a focus on providing accessible, inclusive, and vibrant theatrical works to the public. The Festival presents Shakespeare plays, related dramas and special events from June to September in two modern theatre tents, in the magnificent waterfront setting of Sen̓ákw/Vanier Park. POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director of Operations and supervised by the Operations Manager and the Patron and Volunteer Supervisor, the Retail Managers are part of the team who oversee the general day-to-day operations of our on-site Concession and Boutique. Our concession offers a variety of snacks, non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages to our theatre patrons and our Boutique offers unique Bard on the Beach and Shakespeare related merchandise. Concession and Boutique Managers are responsible for keeping all work and storage areas clean and organized, ensuring that the shift runs smoothly and efficiently and ensuring supplies are fully stocked for the next shift. You’ll be part of a welcoming and collaborative staff team that is deeply committed to upholding and practicing Bard’s Company Commitments.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Concession Managers:

  • Supervise concession and coffee station operations during public performances and events
  • Responsible for reconciliation and reporting
  • Supervise and train Concession and Coffee Station Volunteers
  • Responsible for relaying important information to the Concession and Coffee Station Volunteers at pre-show briefings to ensure they are clear on their duties and responsibilities during the shift
  • Replenish stock and communicate with management when stock is getting low
  • Keep the fridges, counters, storage rooms and workspace clean and compliant with Food Safety standards
  • Report any repairs to equipment and the Concession work area to management immediately
  • Responsible for ensuring that volunteers and staff are complying with BC Liquor Laws including checking ID and occasionally assessing and deciding whether to stop serving a patron
  • Follow and implement emergency protocols in relevant situations.
  • Respond to any patron or volunteer conflicts and work towards achieving conflict resolution

Boutique Managers:

  • Supervise boutique operations during public performances and events
  • Responsible for nightly cash outs, reconciliation, and reporting
  • Supervise and train boutique volunteers
  • Responsible for relaying important information to the boutique volunteers before opening the shop to ensure they are clear on their duties and responsibilities during the shift
  • Replenish stock and communicate with the Boutique Manager when stock is getting low
  • Receive new stock, price and tag each item and properly store new stock in the storage room
  • Keep the boutique, storage room and workspace clean and presentable to patrons
  • Report any repairs to equipment and Boutique work area to management immediately Respond or assist during First Aid incidents and emergencies
  • Respond to any patron or volunteer conflicts and work towards achieving conflict resolution

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE HAS

  • A passion for working with volunteers and members of the public
  • Experience in working with the public and creating a welcoming space
  • The ability to be a team player yet able to work independently
  • A passion for live theatre and the arts, especially Shakespeare, and for inclusive audience practices
  • Experience in the retail or food service industry
  • Experience using iPad-based point of sales systems, experience with Square is an asset
  • Experience supervising volunteers, with strong leadership experience
  • Dependable with strong work ethic and passion for live theatre and the arts, especially Shakespeare
  • Comfortable dealing with high pressure stations, the ability to remain calm during an emergency
  • First Aid level 1 (training can be provided)
  • Serving It Right (training can be provided)
  • Food Safe Level 1

HOURS

Part time, casual between May 1 and September 24, 2022. Please note performances will begin June 8.

COMPENSATION
$18 per hour
