OVERVIEW
Bard on the Beach is Western Canada’s largest professional Shakespeare festival, with a focus on providing accessible, inclusive, and vibrant theatrical works to the public. The Festival presents Shakespeare plays, related dramas and special events from June to September in two modern theatre tents, in the magnificent waterfront setting of Sen̓ákw/Vanier Park. POSITION SUMMARY
The Front of House Managers are responsible for the patron experience during public performances and events at Bard on the Beach. FOH Managers report to the Director of Operations and the Operations Manager and directly supervise a team of volunteers scheduled in their area. FOH Managers are responsible for volunteer and patron safety and wellbeing.
RESPONSIBILITIES
House Managers:
- Directly supervise a team of volunteer ushers
- Relay important information to the volunteers at pre-show briefings to ensure they are clear on their duties and responsibilities during the shift. They may need to train volunteers if necessary
- Prepare the theatre for audiences to ensure the house is safe, clean and presentable for the audience
- Responsible for the safety and comfort of the audience, staff and volunteers
- Liaise with volunteers, stage management and box office to coordinate seating, accessible seating and performance cues at curtain and intermission
- Remain readily available to assist with any special needs, volunteer concerns or to handle seating issues
- Fill out a post-show report to relay any incidents, safety concerns or other notes to the staff distribution lists
Village Managers:
- Directly supervise a team of volunteer village greeters
- Responsible for relaying important information to the village and retail volunteers at pre-show briefings to ensure they are clear on their duties and responsibilities during the shift. They may need to train volunteers if necessary
- Prepare the Village for audiences ensuring the Village is safe, clean and presentable for the audience and reserve picnic tables for groups or members
- Coordinate the opening and closing of the Village and theatres during pre-show, intermissions and post show with the house managers and retail managers
- Ensure site security and safety by securing and checking gates are locked after the last patron has left and checking in with the security team to hand control of the site over before leaving for the evening
- Responsible for the safety and comfort of the patrons, staff and volunteers
- Fill out a post-show report to relay any incidents, safety concerns or other notes to the staff distribution lists
OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE HAS
- A passion for working with volunteers and members of the public
- Experience in working with the public and creating a welcoming space
- The ability to be a team player yet able to work independently
- A passion for live theatre and the arts, especially Shakespeare, and for inclusive audience practices
- Experience as a Front of House Manager or a senior usher
- Experience supervising volunteers, with strong leadership experience.
- Dependable with strong work ethic and passion for live theatre and the arts, especially Shakespeare.
- Comfortable dealing with high pressure stations, the ability to remain calm during an emergency
- First Aid level 1 (training can be provided)
HOURS
Part time, casual between May 1 and September 24, 2022. Please note performances will begin June 8.
COMPENSATION
$18 per hour
