What a great summer! We can hardly believe that it’s all over. We have packed up our tents and our offices and moved back to our off-season home at Cambie and West Broadway. And it’s already time to share our line-up for next season – huzzah!

The 24th season will run June 11th to September 14th. The opening production on our BMO Mainstage will be TWELFTH NIGHT, staged by Dennis Garnhum who is the Artistic Director at Theatre Calgary. Kim Collier, co-founding Artistic Director of Electric Company Theatre will direct HAMLET. On the Douglas Campbell Studio Stage, John Murphy will direct MEASURE FOR MEASURE and Rachel Ditor will direct ELIZABETH REX by Timothy Findley.

Here’s a brief look at next year’s productions:

TWELFTH NIGHT – set in Italy in the 1900s at the What You Will Hotel and Spa. We’ll encounter a cast of characters including Feste, the lobby bar singer and enjoy all the pampering of a fine European spa. Relaxation and hilarity will be tied together in a gorgeous celebration of love.

HAMLET – set in modern times, director Kim Collier envisions that “the play will evoke our 2012 world of the powerful, privileged leaders that command our countries and commerce. In this production, we will be viscerally reminded that the seeking and protecting of power creates a poor shell of a culture to live in.”

MEASURE FOR MEASURE– set in New Orleans in 1900, at the time when jazz music was being born, this dark comedy of hypocrisy, sexual repression, and the true nature of justice is scored by the boisterous horns of New Orleans.

ELIZABETH REX – set in Elizabethan England and written by the late Canadian playwright Timothy Findley.  On the eve of the beheading of her rumoured lover, the Earl of Essex, Queen Elizabeth commands a performance of Much Ado About Nothing by Shakespeare and his company. She meets an actor known for playing the roles of women and through their encounter deeper truths are revealed. Elizabeth Rex won the Governor General’s Award for English Language Drama in 2000.

Ok, so this season was great but how excited are you for next year? It’s going to be a little different but tons of fun. Keep reading our Bard blog, we’ll have much more in the coming months.
