2019 Winter Schedule

JANUARY 2019

MONDAY, JANUARY 14

Exploring Character in Shakespeare’s Text

10:30am–12:30pm
Facilitator: Moya O’Connell, Bard Company Member

Registrations opens at noon on January 2
Understanding a playwright’s style and form is one of the most important ways an actor can uncover character. This workshop will share practical tools for understanding language, rhetoric, intent, and relationship and help participants form a personal and critical relationship with Shakespeare’s text.

Text will be provided for participants, so no advance preparation is required.

Party Pieces with Petten!

1pm – 3pm
Facilitator: Dawn Petten, Bard Company Member

Registrations opens at noon on January 2
Delve into a piece of text you have been working with or would like to work with. We will explore how to play and prepare your Shakespeare role – the homework and the exploration. I will support you to build your relationship to the text you are working with to make it your own.

Bring along either a short scene of dialogue or around 10 lines of continuous text that you would like to work on or have been working with.

MONDAY, JANUARY 21

The Basics: How Form Informs the Acting

10:30am–12:30pm
Facilitator: Colleen Wheeler, Artistic Associate, Bard on the Beach

Registrations opens at noon on January 2
In observing the form of the text, Shakespeare has given you inherent clues that will help you make your acting choices.  We will look at some of his text and work on how to mine these clues and how it can be directly interpreted into choices you make as the actor.

There will be handouts to use as examples and for exploration. Participants can also choose to bring in something they are working on and can be worked on time permitting.

Lines on Lines: Owning the Text

12:30pm–2:30pm
Facilitator: Jennifer Lines, Artistic Associate, Bard on the Beach

Registrations opens at noon on January 2
Join Vancouver actor and Bard Artistic Associate Jennifer Lines as she shares some of the tools she has used over the years to unlock text and character to help breathe life into the work, allowing yourself to shine through the text, uniquely owning it as only you can!

Please be prepared with approximately 12-14 lines of Shakespeare’s text (no more than a minute and a half).

Status in Shakespeare

1pm–4pm
Facilitator: Jeff Gladstone, Bard Company Member

Registrations opens at noon on January 2
Status – the dynamic, subtle interplay of power and submission in human relationships – provides a playful and potent lens through which to explore Shakespeare’s plays. In this workshop we will play with improvisation and status to enrich your characters, their relationships, and the world they belong to. Come play with Improv and Shakespeare!

Wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to play and to be yourself.

Policies

Cancellation Policy

Due to the popularity and capacity of these classes, we have a very strict cancellation policy. All cancellations must be made before noon on the Wednesday prior to the workshop date. There is a $20 fee that will be applied if you are absent without notifying us by the deadline (see below for specific dates). To cancel, please call our Box Office at 604.739.0559.

Why the cancellation fee?

The $20 fee will be directed to the Education Bursary. We want to continue offering this training for free, and to do this we must ensure that the classes will be filled. When someone neglects to notify us that they can’t make it, they are in effect holding the spot from another person and altering the experience of those that do show up. In the spirit of honoring the time of the faculty and the participants, we have put this policy into place. If you cancel by the deadline (see below), you will not be charged.
